Niki de Saint Phalle | Nanas

The Hanover “Nanas” by Niki de Saint Phalle (b. 1930 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France – d. 2002) are the artist’s first outdoor sculptures to be installed in Germany. These figurative sculptures, created in the visual language of Pop Art, sparked a passionate public debate after they were installed as part of the “Street Art Program.” Today, what was once a provocation has become a hallmark of the city and blends seamlessly into the bustling scene of Germany’s oldest flea market every Saturday. The three figures bear the names Sophie, Caroline, and Charlotte—names of historical significance to Hanover—which were suggested by citizens at the artist’s initiative.
